Our approach to teaching the Martial Arts.

At Universal Martial Arts Centers, we take an eclectic approach to teaching the Martial Arts. Our foundation is established on the dynamic style of Shorin Ryu Karate from Okinawa. With direct lineage linking us to Okinawa. We are the only Martial arts facility in the area that teaches this style.
We also incorporate different arts like Aikido, Judo, Juitisu, Tae Kwon do, Kung Fu, and kickboxing. We stress the importance of using fighting skills as a last resort. Students are taught that fighting does not resolve issues faced in today's society. However, students are taught to use their defensive skills in a responsible manner. Students face strict disciplinary action, and possible expulsion for abusing what they are being taught. We stress the importance of building self-confidence and self-esteem. We believe that a great deal of conflict can be avoided simply by having these two character traits in check. Special care and consideration for the many different types of learning abilities and personalities is taken into consideration in developing, and building these character traits in each of our students. All students are taught on their own individual level. We use several different tools to help us instill, and monitor these character traits. We track their scholastic achievement by sending letters home at each rank advancement opportunity. The student must take a letter to their teacher. The teacher evaluates them and rates them on key behavioral traits. The student must be performing at or above average in order to be eligible for rank advancement. We have found that our "To Do List" is also an essential tool for monitoring the character development of our students.

Rank advancement

Students at Universal Martial Arts Centers are not merely given their ranking. All rank is earned. We have set curriculum, and time requirements in obtaining their next rank. Students must also be performing at or above grade level in school, as well as display respect, honor, and integrity in their every day lives in order to be eligible for rank advancement. Proficiency in technique and working knowledge of requirement are required for rank advancement.
